The Plough and The Rising

 Plough and stars

'The Plough and the Rising' is a symposium event conceived and organised by the service users and staff of Choices Day Programme (St John of God Liffey Region) in collaboration with Run of the Mill Theatre. It marks a year long engagement with the events surrounding the 1916 Easter Rising through education and theatre, supported by Kildare County Council's Decade of Commemorations. The project will culminate at the end of this year, in a unique performance of Sean O' Casey's The Plough and the Stars, directed by Aisling Byrne (Run of the Mill Theatre) on Thursday 15 December at The Celbridge Manor Hotel. This promises to be one of the highlights of Kildare's year of commemorations of the events of 100 years ago.

On 26 April our event in the Mill Community Centre, Celbridge shared some of the wonderful learning that has taken place over the previous three months at Choices Day Programme, and provided a unique cultural experience for the people of Celbridge.  Visitors were be able to enjoy a wonderful exhibition of memorabilia (introduced by collector Padraig O' Brien), interesting conversation, theatrical re-enactment, and an accessible public lecture on The Plough and the Stars by Dr Christopher Collins (The University of Nottingham/Trinity College Dublin).

Choices Day Programme provides day services, educational opportunities and community based supports to adults with an intellectual disability. It is a part of St John of God Community Services Liffey Rregion.

Run of the Mill Theatre is a community based space of creative identity based in Celbridge County Kildare and founded by a number of participants of the drama programmes at St John of God Liffey Region and artistic director Aisling Byrne. The group is based in The Mill Community Centre, Celbridge and provides training and access to arts education across St John of God Liffey Region in Kildare. Run of the Mill is kindly supported by Kildare County Council.
